Samuel C. Ryan — Principal Engineer
Systems engineer with industry experience in semiconductor device physics, optoelectronic component test, defense manufacturing compliance, and utility-scale flow battery test infrastructure. Prior roles include optoelectronic test engineering at Voxtel, thermal imaging camera manufacturing and DOD compliance programs at FLIR Systems, and test infrastructure development for iron-flow batteries at ESS Inc. I hold an M.Sc. in Semiconductor Process Engineering and a B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Oregon, and served as a wideband satellite communications specialist in the Oregon Air National Guard.
Novel Systems Engineering was founded to develop DDR sensor technology from first principles and build the patent portfolio around it. DDR (differential depolarization response) is a polarimetric measurement method that classifies materials by how they scatter polarized light. The licensing model follows from that directly: the work is the IP, not the hardware.
Novel Systems Engineering, LLC
Novel Systems Engineering, LLC is a Portland, Oregon IP development and licensing firm. The company develops, validates, and licenses DDR-based polarimetric LiDAR sensor technology for maritime search and rescue, drone detection, and radar augmentation applications. Technology is developed and patented in-house, then licensed to defense and commercial OEMs. The company does not manufacture sensor hardware.
Current activity: provisional patent prosecution covering the core DDR measurement method and hardware architecture, and licensing outreach to maritime OEMs.
